Are you planning a Garage Sale this year? Do I Need a Permit?
The Town of Trenton does not require a permit for a typical residential garage sale. Garage sales are considered temporary, non‑commercial, personal property sales and are not regulated under the Town’s zoning or building permit requirements.
Helpful Guidelines for a successful sale!
These guidelines help ensure safe, respectful, and neighborhood‑friendly garage sales:
- Keep traffic flowing Do not block roadways, driveways, or create unsafe parking conditions.
- Sign placement
- Place signs only on your own property unless you have permission from another property owner.
- Do not attach signs to utility poles or traffic signs.
- Remove all signs immediately after the sale.
- Hours of operation Hold sales during reasonable daytime hours to avoid disturbing neighbors.
- Noise & conduct Keep noise to a minimum and be considerate of nearby homes.
- Merchandise limits Sales should consist of personal household items. Repeated or large‑scale sales may be considered a business activity, which is regulated. Contact the Trenton Zoning Office at (315) 896-2664 if that is what you are planning.
Best Practices for a Successful Sale!
- Clearly mark prices.
- Keep items organized and easy to browse.
- Secure cash in a safe location.
- Have small bills and change available.
- Consider donating unsold items to local charities.
Good Luck!
