Description:
The Town of Trenton built a recycling and solid waste collection center in 1991, with an addition added in 1998. Since June 1, 1989 it has been mandatory that all county residents separate and recycle newspaper and glass.
Several other items have been added to the recyclable groups since then. The center takes in on an average of 1,438 tons of materials each year. Over 16,000 visits are logged in during the year.
The center is staffed during operating hours. Residents are assisted in unloading when possible, but should be aware that they are responsible for unloading their own vehicles.
The center is open to Town of Trenton businesses and residents only. The center does not accept by-products of a business unless it was generated from a town resident. For instance, the town will not accept used appliances from an appliance dealer unless the item came from a town resident. Businesses are required to obtain a signed statement from the resident on a form supplied by the town. Residents are not allowed to bring materials on behalf of non-town residents or materials generated from outside the town. In order to keep costs down the town may require proof of residency. Please do not be offended if you are asked for this information. Many non-town residents try to use the facility for free. We do not want Trenton taxpayers subsidizing non-resident use.
Attendants often set aside items that may be of use to someone else. These items are on a first come, first take basis. The town sets aside returnable beverage containers. These may be picked up by Town of Trenton non-profit groups for redemption later. Pick up is on a first come, first take basis.
Acceptable items include glass, metal, aluminum, plastic(codes 1 – 5 & 7), paper, appliances, furniture, household items, construction debris and green waste. Branches that are brought in are run through a chipper and the chips are available free for residents to take home.
Items not accepted are household garbage, diapers and hazardous materials. Hazardous material (paint, motor oil, pesticides, chemicals) may be taken to the Oneida-Herkimer Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, Leland Ave. Ext., North Utica (315 733-1224 – call for hours).
Residents are asked to use clear bags only. For proper disposal the workers must see the contents. Containers must be washed clean. Labels do not have to be removed. Do not include lids, caps or tops.
All loads being transported to the center should be covered to avoid being ticketed by law enforcement.
For more information on specific items or how to bundle and package them, please see our brochure that is available at the center or at the Trenton Municipal Center. Also a link to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is provided.
Responsibilities:
Assist town residents in complying with county laws regarding recycling.
Please Note:
These hours will be shared with the Town of Trenton residents, so we ask that you review and follow these basic requirements:
- Try to spread out your visits to the Center over the entire month.
- Make sure all items are separated before entering the Center.
